grommunio in IT-Administrator 04/26

The renowned trade journal “IT-Administrator” from Munich has once again put grommunio under the microscope and reached a highly positive conclusion. This time, the journalists took a close look at version 3.3, which was released at the beginning of the year, in a detailed five-page review.

In particular, the integration of Exchange Web Services and the numerous improvements we’ve been able to implement over the past two years stand out as positive developments. These include not only many bug fixes but also deliver even better performance and stability, making life easier for administrators and users alike. They can now choose which client they want to use with EWS; the range of options is wide, and the integration with Mozilla Thunderbird (version 149 and up) is particularly impressive.

Exchange Web Services, Keycloak, Open ID Connect, Kerberos

In addition to security and authentication, the article discusses Keycloak, OpenID Connect, and Kerberos—all of which are integrated into grommunio—while also taking a look at the “legacy issues from the 1990s” related to Exchange.

Debian-Integration

The author—himself a long-time Debian veteran—is pleased with the integration into other operating systems:“This is precisely where the manufacturer has recently stepped up its efforts. grommunio has hired an official Debian developer whose explicit task is to improve grommunio’s Debian packages—and Gromox’s in particular—for Debian GNU/Linux and Ubuntu, and to ensure their long-term functionality. This is a clear signal that Debian and Ubuntu are no longer to be regarded as a ‘community side track,’ but rather as strategically relevant target platforms.”

An overwhelmingly positive conclusion

The test results are correspondingly positive: grommunio incorporates valuable new features, improves performance across the board, offers even greater compatibility with enterprise services, and is positioning itself:“As a technically interoperable, Exchange-compatible groupware platform, the current version of grommunio is a serious option for organizations that require Exchange functionality but prefer to rely more on open-source components, flexible operating models, and greater control.”

New web and admin interface

But that’s not all: grommunio is constantly being developed. Since this article was published, a new version has been released that builds on the features described, introducing a redesigned web interface and an even more streamlined and faster administration interface. The latter, by the way, is so fast that it can even run on a Raspberry Pi (along with the entire grommunio installation).
